Discussion Question #1

What are some of the strong images of symbolism David B. uses? Why and how does he use them?

Respond in the comments section.

  1. He uses people being pictured as animals i think, because not only do they look like the animal they also have some trait or personality of the animal.(ie. Master N. as a cat)

  2. He relates a lot of things to different wars and this is how he understands what his brother is going through.I also think he likes to relate the people he meets and knows to animals, which helps him understand what kind of personality and how to remember them.

  3. Yin and Yang shows up a lot also because its how he relates everything 2 an equilibriam

  4. Here is a question i/ve been meaning to ask does anyone know why he uses dragons most often in his drawings?

  5. David B. uses certain objects to display different personalities. He uses the dragon so represent his brother's epilepsy. He uses war figures to represent himself. He uses cats to represent most Asians.

However, I'm not sure many people noticed the way David B. transformed himself on page 38, correct me if I'm wrong. He almost drew himself like a troll in order to show what had taken him over to do this to his brother.

He also draws his dead grandfather as a ghost to represent a lot that I don't think we realize is there. Young David uses him as some to went to as he goes through the forest. He talks to him a lot about death which I think are for obvious reason, but I find it a little disturbing that a young boy thinks this extensively about death. Any time death is brought up, his grandfather's ghost is there.

  6. Hope that explains something, but can you guys provide some examples? Page Numbers?

  7. He uses make believe animals to express emotions or people. The dragon, as well as a shadow ghost, is his brothers epilepsy, the cat person was Master N., the lady that sold food to his family slowly turned into a mouse in about 2 pages, and his grandfather turned into a bird when he died.

David B. and his brother use war as a way to deal with what is going on. They both like to draw wars and pretend that they are in them. The difference is David pretends he is one of the soldiers and in the middle of the fighting whereas Jean-Christophe is a leader, like Hitler or Stalin.

  8. thats a good observation i also think that he is very interested in death, it is also wierd how he almost seems posessed by the power to manipulate his brother, because of the epilepsy. I think that there are a lot of different symbols just in what we've read som far some dont seem as important as others but they do show the personality of David B. and the people he knows.

  9. pg #'s 4,5,14,17,37,39,59,64,83,91...these are just a few pages that show symbolism that i've noticed

  10. David uses images of symbolism a lot to show how he thought things happened, or how he rememberes them. Like in page 11, with the circle of doctors, and pages 41-44, with the details of the operation. For things like that, it would make sense for someone at his age not to understand, but how he drew the war seemed rather accurate. Anyone know why that might be?

  11. im not exactly sure how he accurately drew war but for the most part i think that the main reason he knows so much about how war looks is because its really the only thing that seems 2 keep him interested in life,in genral

  12. He was completely immersed in the subject of war. Disturbingly enough, the only books he read were about war. Maybe to express his inner rage, like he says about his brother on page 20.

  13. He also uses backrounds very well for what people are thinking, like page 39 when he's reading "Planete", 58 with the food, or 60 when C is talking about eating moldy carrots.

  14. That's something that I definately noticed, but never really thought too deeply about. What do you think he's trying to accomplish with there backgrounds?

  15. i was wandering if anyone thought that the book jumps around a lot cause sometimes its confusing when one thing happens and then he just skips to the next thing but eventually comes back 2 the same concept b4 like the picture on pg 41 and the picture on pg 72

  16. i think that it may be jumpy but if u really pay attention you can follow the story just fine in my oppinion

  17. At first i thought he was jumping around, but then on page 95/96, he explains that he just wants readers to know about his backround and the troubles his family had to deal with before him

  18. I think that the backgrounds are supposed to b a reference to the personalities of all of the people that he interacts with and that they show a lot about how good or bad davids brother is treated

  19. I think he just tells a lot of short stories. He doesn't spend too long on each, and I think he's doing that on purpose. He gives that image of needles in his brother's head so he can bring it back later. He tells about his grandfather's death because every time death is brought up there after, his grandfather's ghost is standing right behind him.

It's all just reoccuring events and images he wants the readers to be able to relate to later in the story. At the beginning it all seemed like a grabled up mash of stories, but the more we read, the more we read the more purpose those stories hold.

  21. I have a question about the author's name. The cover referes to him as David B., but he is named Pierre-Francois, according to page 3. I also found an incident on page 178, when I was skimming ahead. He sais his name is David, but his brother dismisses it...

  22. I assume the obvious, that he simply had his name changed, but I'm still a little confused.

  23. hes brother ignores it because he wasnt really focused on wats going on at the time and also it might make more since wen we actually read that far

    ReplyDelete
  24. i was thinking about that but i think he changed it when it was translated from French to English

  25. Page 174, he randomly says "Okay, from now on my name is David." I think this comes from some agnst of his brother getting epilepsy. Other than that, I have no idea. Hopefully it will make more sense once we get there.

A little bit before that, someone says "All the best writers are Jewish." I think he wanted a "Jewish" name... No idea...
